I have been to Sonic on several occasions now and every time they bring out the food they stick around and ask "will there be anything else". Im getting the impression they would like me to tip them for bringing out my order, if thats the case wouldnt you think it would be appropriate to have a tip option on the credit card receipt?
Those types of jobs use to receive tips but now that they have credit card machines right there in your face I never have cash with me and always feel bad that I don't have any money to give them! I don't know how their pay scale is set. I guess technically they are "servers" and servers are tipped at other places. It's confusing!
Growing up with Sonic in Texas, we usually tipped. That was before they had the credit card machines right next to the car though. If I have a large order and some change on hand, I will tip 50 cents or something, but if it's just drinks and/or I don't have any cash, I don't.
I have had the same problem with homeless people downtown indianapolis, I use to have cash on me and occasionly give them a few bucks when I worked downtown at the old spag. factory. Now if I am downtown they don't accept debit, and also since I don't smoke anymore I can't even give them a smoke. If you give them a piece of candy or gum they might get mad so I try to ignore them. Probly the same at sonic I would suspect. I won't go there unless I have cash because I use to be a server at a couple restaurants when I was younger.
I always tip based on speed of them getting my order out. If I get a drink only and it take 5 minutes I refuse but if it is quick I normally give them 50 cents or a dollar if it is a large order.
