What do you do with your cell phones that you don't use any longer?

A colleague of mine started a group that is collecting to provide cell phones to those in need. Here is the website so that you can read more about it.

If you are interested in donating your old phones, I'd be happy to meet up with you to collect your phone donation and then drop them off at one of the spots or to the coordinator.

Forgive me for asking this question, but if its for a less fortunate person, how can they afford cell phone service if they are less fortunate? I have heard of giving old cell phones to the military for their use.
I cant help but chuckle as to how someone having a cell phone is going to cure the ills of this world.
